Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) covers a wide array of martial arts systems that were practiced through Europe in the Middle Ages up through the 1800's. Much like Asian Martial Arts, HEMA covers a wide variety of systems, weapons and practices. Here at DMA, our HEMA program is focused on the tradition of German Longsword. This blade is probably the most recognizable and widely studied weapon of the HEMA tradition. Noted for it's versatility and balance, this two handed straight bladed sword was commonly used throughout much of Europe.
The German longsword tradition, as preserved in the works of Johannes Liechtenauer and other masters, offers a sophisticated system of combat that emphasizes both offensive and defensive techniques. Our curriculum is rooted in these historical teachings and includes a wide range of skills and concepts. Students will practice fundamental strikes, thrusts, parries, and footwork, learning to apply these techniques in various combat scenarios. Through a blend of historical study and practical training, participants will gain a deep understanding of the German longsword's unique approach to martial arts. Classes cover key elements such as the use of guards (or "Zornhau" and "Oberhau"), the principles of leverage and timing, and the integration of historical tactics into fluid, effective combat techniques.

With a focus on historical accuracy and effective technique, our experienced instructors guide students through a structured progression of skills. Emphasis is placed on developing both technical proficiency and an appreciation for the historical context that informs these practices. After the foundation is developed, students will have the opportunity to spar using simulated training weapons and safety gear.
