Common Questions

How much are classes?
The price of classes can vary depending on which classes you are interested in taking and how many family members are going to be training with us.  The best thing to do is call Sensei Herreman at 605-370-0085 or stop by the dojo so that we can help you decide which program is the best for you and your situation.  Remember all new students get a week of free classes to try our classes out.

What ages do you take?
We ask that all students be at least 5 years old before they start training in Bujinki Ryu Jujitsu.  This allows a child to have gained the necessary emotional and physical maturity required to be success in our classes.  As for being too old, well, that is never an issue.  We simply adapt the techniques to compensate for the limitations of the body.
How often can I come?
Your membership includes as many classes as you can make, though we recommend coming at least twice a week to progress well through the art.

How long will it take me to get a black belt?
The time it takes to get a Black Belt varies extensively from student to student. The more time and effort you put into the art, the faster you will progress, but time is entirely based on the individual student. We do not believe in setting a time frame for progression in the art. However, a conservative estimate would be three to five years of study.
Do I need to be in good shape to start?
Though being healthy and in good shape is always beneficial, it is not essential to begin studying Jujitsu. Students of every physical fitness level have studied the art of Jujitsu. Each of those students has progressed well through the art, often shedding pounds and improving their health along the way.
Do I need any special equipment or uniforms?
To start with, there is no special equipment needed. Just a comfortable pair of sweats and a t-shirt. Eventually though, you will be asked to purchase a gi (uniform) and sparring gear.
Can I participate in tournaments & competitions?
Definitely!  We encourage our students to challenge themselves and expand their experience through competition and cross training with other styles.  In fact, DMA hosts the Sioux Falls Open Martial Arts Tournament.
I want to train to fight in the cage (MMA), will you train me for that?
While the skills you will learn in Bujinki Ryu JuJitsu transfer very well to the cage, DMA of Sioux Falls does not train students specifically for Mixed Martial Arts. If you are interested in training specifically for MMA, please give us a call and we will be happy to help you find a school to meet your needs.
Do you teach self defense classes?
Yes we do! Please check our Self Defense page for more information.
