Tai Chi Chuan
Originating in Ancient China, Tai Chi is an internal martial art designed to provide healing, strength and balance to the practitioner. Tai Chi (or Taiji) is often called "meditation in motion" but it is so much more than that. It also is an effective martial art that will challenge both your mind and body, while restoring your energy.
The Yang Style Tai Chi taught at DMA uses large, flowing motions throughout its practice. These motions, are great for increasing blood flow, moving synovial fluid and restoring the body. Because the motions are done slowly, the student can focus on developing the correct postures, breathing and flow that provides the most health benefits without worrying if they can do the fancy jumps and fast movements required by most martial arts. This allows for Tai Chi to be practiced by anyone, regardless of his or her fitness level or age.
In our classes, Sifu Joel will guide you through the basic movements then begin you on your Tai Chi journey with the basic 12 step form. As you grow in skill, you will eventually be introduced to the longer 24 step form, and finally the full 108 movement form. In addition as your skill develops you will also have the chance to learn the Tai Chi sword forms and staff forms.

1. Increased Muscle Strength - According to Harvard Health, when practiced regularly, tai chi is comparable to resistance training or brisk walking

4. Better Aerobic Conditioning - Tai Chi can help to increase heart health without strain.
5. Stress reduction - In a 2018 study published in Clinical Psychology, researchers found that Tai Chi provides the same benefits to managing stress as other exercises, but noted that due to its meditation and breathing focus it may be superior to other types of exercise to reduce stress and anxiety.
6. Better Sleep - A 2016 study published in Pubmed Central found that those that practice Tai Chi twice a week found significant improvement in their sleep.
7. Improved Cognition - A 2018 study published in Neuroscience, Neurology, and Psychiatry found that Tai Chi may help to improve memory and executive functioning.
